Enjoy Your Boating – Tips On Staying Safe

Additional Information Relating To Water Safety.

Boating safety commences with showing a little common sense and planning your journey well ahead of time. “No problem” I hear you say, well the reality is that many boaters, new and old, focus too much on the activities they are going to undertake in the form of fun and completely forget the safety aspect. Boating is all about having a great time whilst on the water but there is no reason to forget about the risks involved and how you may be risking your life, and maybe others, when doing so.

Laying Down Some Ground Rules And Voyage Plans.

All boating instructors and guidance books advocate the simplest tip which is to know the destination, know your crew and to know your time of return before you take to the water. Additionally you should apply common sense and make sure that your boat is seaworthy even if you are only going on a short voyage. Never overload your boat and make sure the engine is checked and that you have the neccessary safety equipment onboard. As well as the afforementioned points you should also carry extra fuel onboard in an external canister and also carry a basic toolkit it case of engine malfunction. Other items that you are required to carry onboard (from a safety perspective) are a bilge pump, fire extinguisher and Personal Floatation Devices (PDF) for each and every member on board.

The Weather And It’s Threat.

In addition, proper boating safety also means knowing how to deal with variables that are beyond your control such as inclement weather, and in case you are confronted with a thunderhead, there is no sense in trying to outrun the thunderhead; rather, changing course to a ninety degree angle from the storm’s direction is a better approach. And, when the storm hits you makes sure that you have stowed away all loose gear and point the bow of the boat at the storm and have the engine powered enough sufficiently to handle the action of the high waves. These tips are basic and of sound and simple advice and by following them you can avert any potential disasters and continue to experience all the joys that boating has to bring you.

There are additional areas of safety and measures of precaution that need to be undertaken that depend of the level of expertise that you have, the boat type and the weather systems that you are sailing in. Note that the tips above do not address these and are basic measurres only.
