I am forced to wonder about the sometimes ignominious position of the canoe in our society. I think it must be related to two issues. One, for man people, the canoe is associated with summer camp, which is a rather ridiculous situation in and of itself, at least from an adult perspective. And two, thanks to “America’s Funnies Home Videos,” we have probably seen more people fall out of canoes than out of any other type of boat. Yes, the general view of canoes, at least in my estimation, is that they are rather clumsy boats, difficult to manage and easy to tip over. However, to those who actually know how to pilot them, canoes are a source of great enjoyment and pride.

On a recent canoe trip, I realized that there is a need for this article. A bunch of my friends got together and went down in the boonies for a two-day canoe trip. It sounded like a great deal at first, pay $110 per person, bring your tent and whatever you want to drink, and we’ll have a couple extra pup tents if anybody needs a place to sleep. For $110, it included the canoe rental, campsite, and all the food so no need to bring groceries. Sounded easy enough, thank goodness old habits are hard to break as I still brought my own pup tent and own cooler and of course couldn’t resist the sale on Pringles and Little Debbies, when I was at the store.

An interior campsite is only accessible by canoe or by hiking in the late spring, summer and fall. During the winter, the interior campgrounds are accessible by cross-country skiing or by snowshoe.
